Bicycle theft is a terrible problem in every major city. When I was on the bus the other day (I had a bit of a cold, so I rode the bus even though it was a very nice day) and the bus ride ended up taking close to 2 hours due to an accident on the bridge, I ended up talking to another guy on the bus who usually rides.

The reason he wasn't riding is that his bike was stolen from in front of his office building. I'm lucky enough to work in a building with really good secure bike storage, but not everyone has that advantage. He said that it was simply a case where he was working a little late and when he went outside later in the evening his bike was gone.

One suggestion that I gave him that he liked was to remove the decals and paint with a matte paint to give the bike a very plain appearance and reduce the attraction of the bike. He thought that was a pretty good idea.

What other suggestions do others have for dealing with having to lock your bike up in downtown. Obviously a good lock in important but what else can work?
